AREDN in the Park - June 20th, 2025

You are invited to AREDN in the Park!

When:

1100-1500 Saturday June 21, 2025 (Presentation/training on AREDN Mesh usage and services at 1300-1400)

What:

You are invited to a demonstration and hands-on training for our AREDN Willamette Valley Mesh Network.

Why:

AREDN is a modern high speed communication system developed by Amateur Radio Operators which converts commercial long range microwave WiFi equipment into a mesh network capable of many useful and interesting services which can be used in emergency operations or for everyday use. This demonstrates how mesh can be deployed in a Portable Ad Hoc operation using RF Microwave frequencies. We will have a variety of Mesh Equipment on display and operators to answer your questions about mesh.

What to bring:

A notebook PC or tablet capable of 2.4 GHz WiFi connectivity with a web browser. You will use your device to join the local WiFi hotspot and navigate to basic services on the mesh via web pages. If you have Winlink Express on your Notebook PC, you will learn to connect and send Winlink messages.
Bring your own food/drink please.
The weather forecast is for rain on Saturday, so dress to stay warm and dry. We will have a covered area, but it is exposed to wind.

Cost is free. If you want to contribute a small amount to the $60 rental cost for the the pavilion, it will be appreciated.

73 and hope to see you there!

Winter Field Day - January 25 & 26, 2025

This year Willamette Valley Mesh is hosting a Winter Field Day event in Newberg, and you are invited!
The Winter Field Day Association states:

"The Winter Field Day event aims to help participants improve their preparedness for disasters and enhance their operational abilities in adverse conditions. Amateur radio operators have the freedom to use frequencies on the HF, VHF, or UHF bands while employing voice, CW, and digital transmissions.”

It offers a unique opportunity for radio operators to set up field operations in remote locations, enabling them to connect with other participants worldwide.

Our location is near the top of Parrett Mountain in Newberg, Oregon at the Bob & Crystal Rilee Park Trailhead (see map below).
Thanks to Chehalem Parks and Recreation District, we have obtained permission for overnight camping with setup on Friday Jan 24 and Saturday Jan 25, with conclusion of the event and cleanup on Sunday 26th.

The AREDN mesh network will be deployed to facilitate coordination, information, and group logging.

We are currently seeking participants from the Amateur Radio Community to join us in setting up portable operations in the park and making contacts.

This is still in the preparation phase, so we need to decide quickly on the operators, schedule, bands, and modes of operation. Some power generation and radio equipment will be provided, but it is best to coordinate on equipment and possibly meals.

Please contact Richard Cornwell, K9RCP at rcp@techtoknow.net to RSVP before January 19.

Let him know what equipment you will be bringing, and how you can help. You will need to come prepared to camp and operate your portable station for the weekend. It will be challenging and fun.Visitors are also welcome.

Updates and more details will be published here and on the Willamette Valley Mesh Network (WVMN) reflector: https://groups.io/g/WVMN
